Cam's Community Work

A Testimonial from Councilor Britton

My name is Mike Britton, and I am a former St Catharines City Councillor and Regional Councillor, a Board Member of CrimeStoppers of Niagara, and an avid volunteer for many community groups (Habitat for Humanity Niagara, the Royal Canadian Legion – Branch 24, United Way’s GenNext Cabinet, Rotaract Niagara, to name a few).

I met Cameron Wilson in 2017 through my duties as a City Councillor. Cameron reached out to me because – as a decision maker in the community – he wanted me to be informed about certain aspects of our banking system in regards to his area of expertise: mortgages. Through discussions with him, I came to a better understanding of banks vs. credit unions. This directly resulted in a change of the City of St Catharines’ investment policy which allowed for more of the City’s reserves to be shifted to credit unions resulting in higher rates of return and more dollars available in our budget to help the community. Cameron knew that the time he spent with me on this file would not benefit him or his business in any direct way but was willing to do so as he believed it was the right thing to do and would help the community at large. This speaks to Cameron’s character and motivation to selflessly help people.

Cameron and I continued to talk after our success with the City’s investment policy and developed a friendship. He began to tell me about another way he wanted to give back to the community – the Niagara Community Mortgage Plan. He asked for my endorsement of the Plan which I, along with Mayor of St Catharines and a number of other community leaders, freely gave because we knew Cameron as a person who was trying to better our Region in any way he was able. Cameron’s initiative raised over $40,000 for the Niagara Health System and I am confident his passion for the others will not only have him continue to raise funds for worthy causes, but inspire other businesses to become community-minded corporate citizens as well.

The Cameron I know is passionate about helping others, abhors those people and businesses that would take advantage of the less fortunate, and is willing to sacrifice financial earnings and even his own wellbeing if he believes it is the right thing to do for someone else. In all my interactions with Cameron, he has always been quick to offer help, his motivations seem only to benefit the greater good, and I know if he continues in the same way, the Region of Niagara will be a better place for it.

Sincerely,

Mike Britton
